McCall's 6918 - Whole30Fabric Challenge Progress

I’m making good progress on my Whole30Fabric Challenge and have used 24 ½ yards, a great milestone as April comes to an end.

As I move into May, my goal is to finish out this challenge.  I’ve got several accessory projects in mind—bags and pouches—and I’ll need to purchase fabric for those.

To help me reach my goal quickly, I’m focusing on sewing multiple garments from the same patterns, using different fabrics to add variety without starting from scratch each time.  McCall’s 6918 is officially on that list.

McCall’s 6918 is a knit skirt pattern with several style options. I made View D in size 14 for my niece. She usually wears a size 10/12 in store-bought kids’ clothes, so that should help you compare the sizing.

You might be thinking, "Haven’t I seen this fabric here before?" Yes. In 2022, during our annual sew date, my best friend made a Luna Tank, while I made a bodysuit for myself and Simplicity 8429 for my niece. This fabric stood out to me, and I loved it so much that I went back to Hobby Lobby and bought more after we finished those projects.

It’s a textured knit with just the right amount of visual interest, and it really lends itself well to garments that need both comfort and movement.

View D features side seam godets, which add a subtle flare and movement to the skirt. It’s a simple detail, but it gives the skirt a little extra personality without a complicated construction.  The pattern is labeled beginner-friendly, and I agree. This is a great option if you’re new to sewing or just want a quick, satisfying project.

That said, I’m not completely sure I’ll revisit View D. It turned out cute, but it didn’t quite hit that “make it again immediately” mark for my niece or m.  Where this pattern really shines (for me) is View B and E.  My niece already has a few skorts from last summer with similar style lines, but they’re a bit too short now. She specifically requested View E, so View E is definitely going into rotation for her summer wardrobe.  I’m planning to make multiple versions, which fits perfectly into my sewing strategy right now.  Overall, this was a satisfying make that helped me stay on track with my goals while creating something my niece will actually wear. I’m excited to keep building on this pattern and see where it takes me next.
