In the Kitchen: A Quilted Hot Pad & Strawberry Cheesecake Sweet Rolls
There’s something especially satisfying about making things that I get to showcase around the house. Don’t get me wrong, my garments are showcased as well, but household items tend to get far more daily use. I am feeling especially inspired by all of the baking I’ve been doing lately, so it was a no-brainer to make a hot pad for my 8 x 8 baking dish.
This hot pad is constructed as a turn-and-topstitch mat, rather than being finished with traditional binding. After fusing the appliqué pieces and quilting (optional), the layers are turned right side out and can be topstitched or finished by hand (as I did) for a clean, finished edge. This method makes the mat fully reversible, with both sides usable depending on your mood.
One of the best parts of this project is that all of the fabric pieces can be cut using a Cricut Maker with the rotary blade, making it a great option for anyone who prefers machine cutting over cutting by hand.
I sewed this hot pad as part of a one-day make, taking a break midway to prep the dough for the sweet rolls. While the dough rested, I returned to finish the quilting and topstitching—letting the sewing and baking share the same rhythm. By the time the rolls came out of the oven, the hot pad was ready to do its job.
Below you’ll find everything you need to recreate this project at home, including the full materials list, fabric cutting sizes, and my sewing tutorial video. And as a bonus, I also included the recipe for the strawberry cheesecake sweet rolls.
