Vogue 9298: Deep Plunge Neckline Bodysuit

How long does it take me to write a pattern review after I sew a garment? Well, three years is my new record. I made a top using this pattern in early 2019, and I completely forgot to do a review. It wasn’t until I searched my website in an attempt to share a link to the pattern review when I posted the new top on Instagram in January of this year that I realized I never wrote a pattern review for the first version. So here’s your pattern review three years late but available nevertheless.

At this point, it is undeniable that I am a bodysuit woman. I probably sew two to three bodysuits a year. Reasons why I am team bodsuits: bodysuits can’t come untucked and also eliminate the bulk that usually comes from having to tuck in a top. Vogue 9298 bodysuit pattern has a deep plunge neckline, and it is the only thing that I don’t like about the design. I cut the size ten and made no adjustments in regards to sizing. I love the crossover front and the fact that it has three sleeve options: sleeveless, short, or full-length. The first time I made V9298, I tacked the front crossover pieces to prevent full-breast exposure when bending over.

This second go around, I decided to widen the front-facing area so I could have an additional pleat to add more coverage. I did get additional coverage with this modification, but it still isn’t enough, and I have to wear a crop cami top under it when I wear it to work. I made the second version using a double-brushed floral print knit, which was a remnant from fabric purchased in 2019.

The pattern calls for the panty leg opening to be finished using fusible webbing to adhere the facing to the edges of the panty opening (see photo below ). I love the clean finish but discovered that the fusible webbing comes unfused after a few washes. For the floral print bodysuit, I finished the panty leg opening using my go-to method, a stretch lace finish (see here for example).

Now that I have made this with the modification, it is not likely that I will be sewing a bodysuit using this pattern again. I like to create garments that I can wear for brunch dates and work. V9298 is excellent for a brunch date look but not appropriate for work. So the search for a full-coverage, crossover front bodysuit continues. If you have any pattern suggestions, I would love it if you would drop them in the comments or shoot me an email.
